About

Madeleine Sargent is a Paris-based painter, photographer, and arts professional whose practice explores art as a means of translating the complexity of the natural world through material process and observation. Alongside more than six years in arts leadership and administration, she has developed a studio practice that now serves as the primary focus of her career.

An honors graduate of Wesleyan University, Madeleine holds a dual degree in Studio Art and Government. Drawing on a foundation in photography and visual composition, she creates large-scale watercolor and ink paintings that emphasize gesture, atmosphere, and intricate details. Through layered surfaces and the interplay of watercolor, Sumi ink, dye, and acrylic, her work investigates how material behavior can reveal the complex systems and quiet nuances embedded in everyday life.

Since relocating to France in 2025, Madeleine has expanded her practice through training in traditional decorative painting and engaging with public art. Her journey began with studying with master dollhouse craftsman Eric Lansdown in the South of France and continued after relocating to Paris to work on large-scale public art installations. She has contributed to major public Parisian projects, including JR’s La Caverne à Pont Neuf and, with Benjamin Craig Design, painting faux ‘pierre de Paris’ at the Champs-Élysées Marriott. Currently, she is a resident artist at 59 Rivoli, where she maintains an atelier on the sixth floor.

Bridging contemporary fine art, traditional craftsmanship, and public engagement, Madeleine continues to develop a painting practice informed by close observation, material experimentation, and cultural exchange. As she builds her practice internationally, her work increasingly reflects a world-centered perspective—one shaped by learning from new places, engaging with diverse communities, and uncovering the layered complexity within our everyday environments.
